D’Angelo Russell (LAL) – “D. Loading”

Profile:
Guard: 6’5, 195 lbs; 3rd year, Ohio State
NBA Role: creative playmaker
“Smooth meets confidence”: the best phrase to summarize D’Angelo Russell’s game; one of the league’s budding stars at PG, Russell already features great passing and playmaking instincts – makes difficult dimes look easy, can thread the needle in tight spots – always has his head up on the run; adjusts well to the ebbs and flows of games; upright dribbling stance – has a really old-school feel – shoots about as quick as Dick Barnett back in the day*, doesn’t exert too much energy; needs to perfect that Chris Paul (LAC) “probing jumper” up top or that Andre Miller turnaround J on the block – Russell’s version could be super effective since he stands at 6’5 & doesn’t need space to shoot; more consistent outside shooting, defense, and learning how to control an offense without wasting possessions for 35+ minutes are three hurdles; plays a little too cool at times – not necessarily loose w/ the rock but lazy entry passes, for instance, need to disappear; incredibly cold bloodstream – is D. Loading the guy for the Los Angeles Lakers?
*Russell’s shot is a bit more appeasing aesthetically, however

- “No Loading Necessary” – The original ‘ice in my veins’ game, that’s not what’s important here • Russell’s lefty jumper does a lot of damage – has the green light 24/7 – handoffs, post kickouts, midrangers after a screen/probing • (via DownToBuck; Mar. 2016):
