Warriors legend Nate “The Great” Thurmond has passed away at age 74 after a short battle with leukemia. Considered to be one of the top 50 greatest NBA players of all time, Thurmond’s’ resume boasts the following:
- 7x NBA All-Star
- 2x NBA All-Defensive First Team
- 3x NBA All-Defensive Second Team
- NBA All-Rookie First Team
- Jersey retired by both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors
Thurmond played 14 illustrious seasons in the NBA and is one of the greatest forwards/centers to play the game although his resume often gets overshadowed by other greats such as Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His career started in the bay area, being drafted by the San Francisco Warriors #3 overall in 1963. He also suited up for the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers, ultimately retiring in 1977.
Perhaps his most defining achievement in his career, Thurmond is the first player in NBA history to record a quadruple double; in 1974 Thurmond notched 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks. Also, he impressively is one of four players in NBA history to grab over 40 rebounds in a game (42). (see below)
Thurmond was inucted into the Naismith NBA Hall of Fame in 1985. His career averages are: 15 PPG, 15 RPG, 2.7 APG. The man averaged 15 and 15 over his career! The greatest season in his career occured in 1967-’68 when he averaged 20.5 PPG and 22 RPG with the Warriors.
